Can it be possible that OFWGKTA, emerging on the music scene just last year with disturbingly raunchy raps, is already closing the mtvU Woodie Awards? Apparently so. Rising to the forefront of the Hip-Hop scene in the blink of an eye with a hostile takeover via online, the Odd Future gang now has the world of pop culture mesmerized. Tyler, the Creator and his cohorts stole the show, with a performance complete with ski-masks, rainbow gnomes, dancing stuffed-animals, crowd-surfing, and yes, a swagged-out midget. These LA teens sure as hell know what they’re doing.
The Foo Fighters, Sleigh Bells, and Wiz Khalifa performed at the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards in Austin, Texas. Upcoming comedian/actor/rapper Donald Glover hosted MTV’s SXSW event, dishing out awards for the most popular videos of the year. But much of the hour long televised show was dedicated to new rising talent with highlight performances by Irish rock band Two Door Cinema Club and Los Angeles rap collective OFWGKTA. With the whole crew, Tyler, the Creator and Hodgy Beats brought the raw intensity of “Yonkers” and “Sandwitches.” Between Lil B stealing Kanye’s award, Left Brain doing a kegstand backstage with Yellawolf, and Domo Genesis cookin’ throughout, the mtvU Woodie Awards was surprisingly full of swag.
OFWGKTA recently revealed plans of working with Adult Swim on a pilot for a late night comedy television show. Check out video footage of the crew’s performance at the mtvU Woodie Awars, as well as a backstage interview here (courtesy of MTV):
