New Music: OverDoz

This is a very exciting time for rap. After years of over-saturation by mediocre lyrics over the same old beats, the hip-hop community has begun to support original music and creative personalities. With the emerging popularity of Kendrick Lamar, Dom Kennedy, and OFWGKTA, the beautiful  state of California has led the way. Now it’s only a matter of time before OverDoz get their shine.

The four members of the So Cal collective met and began writing music together in Modesto during the summer of 2008. Sleezy, Kent, Creamie, and Tube have since carved a unique lane for themselves in the hip-hip world through a slew of music videos that show the group’s wacky vibe and constantly stoned mindset. Their latest video directed by Calmatic for “Pasadena” follows the group’s late night booty call adventures through California. OverDoz is anything but normal with a weird sense of humor. And Sour Grape digs that. Check out their website, follow them on Twitter and get DESTED.

Showtime with Sour Grape: Beats Rhymes & Life

Alright let me first state that no artist or music group has been more influential in my life than A Tribe Called Quest. When my adolescent self stumbled on a hip-hop group that flowed over jazz tunes with style and grace, my exclusive world of rap collided with my parents’ collection of soulful records, and A Tribe Called Quest became my favorite music to listen to all day, everyday. The group’s deep catalog of sampled records expanded my mind to appreciate all sorts of quality music and ignited my interest in the dopeness. So viewing Michael Rapaport’s newly released documentary Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest was an especially personal experience that had me buzzing for days. Listen: New Music From Flying Lotus

Although Stephen Ellison aka Flying Lotus has expressed his distaste for Soundcloud, the 27 year old Los Angeles based producer has recently uploaded several new tracks to his new Soundcloud page. Providing a glimpse into his new material, FlyLo continues to create grandioso electronic music that takes listeners on a sonic trip through the mind of a forward thinking artist. Beautiful spaced out noises trickle over deep gritty drums and heavy basslines to produce a one of a kind atmosphere only Flying Lotus inhabits. Remixes and new original music should feed craving fans until his next official release.

Also, make sure to download FlyLo’s 2 hour mix of classic gems titled “Lover’s Melt 2.” Free download of “Lover’s Melt 2” is available on Brainfeeder’s website.

New Music: Mansions on the Moon

Could it be, what I see, is a glimpse of the future? The indie electro group Mansions On The Moon asks this question on their debut mixtape “Paradise Falls,” and the folks at Sour Grape are wondering the same.

Formed a little over a year ago, the trio of Lane Shaw, Ben Hazlegrove, and Ted Wendler has created quite the buzz with their latest chillwave dance project Mansions On The Moon. Recording at studios in Atlanta and Virginia Beach, the group has already collaborated with industry tastemakers including Pharrell and Diplo to create an infectious sound of beautiful melodies over smooth electronic productions.

The band’s debut mixtape titled “Paradise Falls” includes original tracks as well as covers to showcase the group’s ability to transform any song into a Mansion On The Moon anthem with their own signature style. Although mellow electro tunes are the staples of Mansions On The Moon, the group dances over all sorts of electronic beats with ease. “She Makes Me Feel” is a gorgeous love ballad that places the raw talent and addictive sound of Mansions On The Moon on full display.

Mansions On The Moon are currently recording their debut album Lightyears in Los Angeles. Download their mixtape “Paradise Falls” for free on their website: mansionsonthemoon.com

New Music: ODS

The kids want minimal. Well 20 year old Las Vegas native Brett Fonfa aka ODS has answered the call. Producing deep bass heavy tracks with a touch of trippy effects complemented by hypnotic vocals, ODS has picked up the minimal torch for the next generation. Drawing inspiration from legends of the genre such as Richie Hawtin, ODS has the ear for addictive minimal dance music that everyone can’t help but love. His production is simple with gut thumping baselines that will rip your heart out, yet also quite complex as a new weird noise or tick is revealed upon every additional listen. The latest track from ODS titled “First Time” is a serious banger and a head bobbing sign of whats to come from the desert son.

March Madness!

Is there a better time of year than March Madness? When buzzer beaters from unheard of schools began knocking out major contenders from the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, I half expected cheerful carolers to appear singing on my doorstep.
